ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Remedies, a local health and human services agency, wants to build a medical clinic to treat people with certain drug addictions as well as serve as a crisis shelter for women and children.

Remedies is just a step away from expanding its services in Rockford. They’d like to build a 25,000 square foot methadone clinic in Rockford and a crisis center for women and children who are being abused. In order to do that, they have to ask the city to rezone a plot of land located at 5011 East State Street. Right now, that property is zoned for apartments, not a clinic like Remedies to build there. The project would cost $3 million dollars, pending approval from the City.

Remedies has been in business for over half a century. Right now they’re only able house about 30 people. If their new center was approved, they’d like to have about 50 beds. The agency is also helping some local survivors of domestic violence and will now have access to free legal consultation. Remedies is one of the facilities that will help victims ask attorneys questions about child custody, marriage or divorce, and property issues. “Hope” in Rochelle and “Voices” in Freeport will also offer the services.
