AUBURN HILLS, Mich (CHRYSLER) -- The Dodge brand is giving a sneak peek into the high-tech, precisely crafted and highly customizable interior of its all-new 2013 Dodge Dart. Scheduled to be introduced Jan. 9 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the new Dodge Dart’s interior sets a new standard for compact cars.

Setting a New Standard – Quality & Spaciousness
Dodge designers focused on creating a modern blend of precision craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology, exciting bursts of color and hand-sculpted shapes when designing the Dart’s interior, which is made with materials and technology typically found in more expensive vehicle segments. Starting with modern Dodge DNA and through the use of innovative ambient interior lighting, high-quality soft-touch materials and high-tech features, the 2013 Dodge Dart is loaded with cool amenities and unexpected delights for both drivers and passengers.

The Dart’s “driver-centric” layout is designed to put all controls within easy reach of the driver. Customizable displays and comfort-tuned seats are packaged in an exceptionally spacious, pleasing interior. Packaged in the footprint of a compact car, the 2013 Dodge Dart features the interior spaciousness of a mid-sized sedan, and it boasts best-in-class hip and shoulder room.

Unmatched Customization
Customization was key in the all-new Dodge Dart’s development, and with 12 exterior colors, 14 interior color and trim combinations, six wheel options, three engine options and three transmissions, each Dodge Dart can be personalized by every buyer to fit their individual style. And the combinations are multiplied exponentially, as Mopar will also offer hundreds of customization options and themed packages specifically developed for the Dart.

Class-leading Technology
The high-tech centerpiece of the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart is the class-exclusive floating island bezel, which houses the segment-exclusive available 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) customizable gauge cluster display with light pipe surround that also houses the available class-exclusive UConnect Touch 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia center -- the largest touch-screen in its class.

Thoughtful storage options throughout fit today’s technology. The glove box easily conceals a stowed iPad; the center console features auxiliary jacks to plug in a wide variety of electronic devices, and thoughtful, inventive storage solutions, such as console map pockets, which are perfect for storing mobile phones, receipts, or pen and paper.

Lighting in all the right places provides drivers and passengers a warm, comfortable cockpit. Available “racetrack” lighting surrounds the floating island bezel. Ambient lighting for the door handles, map pockets, foot wells, glove box, storage bin and illuminated cup holders is both useful and provides a warm atmosphere inside the vehicle.

Unmatched Safety
Safety was also at the forefront in the development of the all-new 2013 Dodge Dart. Built on a strong foundation, constructed with 68 percent high-strength steel, engineers added both active and passive safety features, including 10 standard airbags, which is unsurpassed in the segment. The 2013 Dodge Dart is also the only car in its class to offer blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection.

Chrysler is reaching back in history for the name of its newest small car: a car that we now know will be made at the Belvidere Assembly Plant.

The Dodge Dart will become the newest model in Belvidere. It takes the name of a popular sporty model from the 1960s and 70s. However, this new Dodge Dart will be very little like its predecessor.

The 2013 model will be unveiled this January at the Detroit Auto Show, but these are some teaser photos:

This new Dart will be similar to the Fiat brand Alfa Romeo Giulietta and it is expected to be the first model in the entire Chrysler brand to get 40 miles per gallon on the highway. Autoline Detroit host John McIlroy said today that he fully expects this new Dodge Dart to stick.

He said, "It better I mean that's exactly the plan. Chrysler has high goals for selling this car and when you look at it, neither the Chrysler brand nor the Dodge brand has really had a small really fuel efficient car to compete with. For Fiat's future plans, really running Chrysler the way it wants. This car is critical."

Promises of returning the third shift may be fulfilled at the Belvidere Chrysler Plant as workers will start assembling the dodge dart as soon as next year.

Judie Pruitt whose husband worked at plant said, "I'm hoping that it will create jobs and it will sell."

The new model is expected to breathe new life to the Stateline’s auto industry and the city of Belvidere in general.

Belvidere Resident Jim Populorum said, "It's great for Belvidere. Anything that brings in jobs and spurs up the economy is great because at one time several years ago, this place was on the chopping block!"

Some feared a Chrysler-Fiat merger, but it did lead to a three year 600 million dollar expansion project. It's been a mystery as to what vehicle was coming and how many jobs it might bring. Now we know and in the future we could see a Dart on display.

Pruitt said, "I don't know if there's people still laid off, but maybe some of these people can come back."

It still remains a mystery as to what that expansion project is for. Yet many workers are hopeful it translates to more job security

Chrysler's UAW Vice President announced in May the third shift would return to Belvidere, but no timeline has since been released.

The local UAW chapter president declined an on-camera interview today, but tells us he expects the Dodge Dart to bring more jobs to Belvidere.

DETROIT (AP) -- The Dodge Dart is making a comeback.

Chrysler said Monday that it will use the Dart name for a new compact car based on Italian technology that it will introduce in the U.S. next year.

It will be made at the Chrysler assembly plant in Belvidere where the company is investing $600 million.

The Dart is expected to get 40 miles per gallon on the highway. It's an extremely important car for Chrysler Group LLC, which currently has outdated offerings in the fast-growing compact car market.

The new car is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (pronounced "JEW'-lee-eh-tuh"), which is sold in Europe. But it will be wider and longer to handle Americans' need for more space.

Fact File
The original Dart was in production from 1960 through 1976.

This new version will have the same chassis or platform of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

It is expected to be the first Chrysler model to get 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Dart will replace the Belvidere made Dodge Caliber and it is expected to hit showrooms in the first half of next year.

There’s no word yet on how much it will cost.
