CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago aldermen passed a ban on guns in the city's bars as well as restaurants that sell liquor, even though city leaders say they expect to be sued.

Wednesday's vote to skirt a new state law was unanimous.

Alderman Ed Burke says a law firm has agreed to represent the city for free in an expected legal challenge from gun rights advocates.

Supporters say the council should enact the toughest ordinance possible and scale it back if they lose the legal battle. They also say the ordinance is supported by local restaurant and bar owners.

A state law bans firearms from establishments where alcohol sales account for at least half of revenues.

The council also passed a measure making it simpler and less expensive for residents to own a gun.
