ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Big changes are coming to the Fairgrounds neighborhood. The public housing complex will eventually be torn down. It’s part of the revitalization plan to enhance the Ellis Heights neighborhood.
Fairgrounds is located on West Jefferson Street, an area Rockford police say has been a hot spot for crime. However, workers at the RHA say when it’s rebuilt it will have fewer public housing units. The rest will be open for market value. It’s part of the long-term choice neighborhood’s plan where those who live in the area gave their input as to what they wanted to see change in their community.
“It’s going to be multiple phases and when we look at what housing looks like now and what it’s going to look like 10 years from now, drastically different, it’ll change the way our neighborhood is structured.
Although the new Fairgrounds will have fewer units for low-income families, workers at RHA say those people will be moved to another housing complex.
This is just one of more than 70 initiatives to rehabilitate the area and provide a better quality of life both physically and socially.
