Car Burglaries on the Rise Along E. State

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Rockford Police remind drivers to lock up our cars after a rash of burglaries on the east side.

Officers say car burglaries on the east side jumped more than 100% from April to May. Most happened in parking lots along East State Street.

It’s nice to drive with our windows down, but officers say a lot of car burglaries happen when we leave our windows down or leave valuables in plain view.

Just put it out of view. Put the little loose change out of view. Put the GPS away, but people think ‘I’m only running into a store for 5-10 minutes.’ They’re not thinking about somebody could just be wandering around in that parking lot, thinking just about how many cars are in that parking lot,” said Deputy Chief Lori Sweeney.

The police department also encourages businesses along East State Street to put out signs reminding drivers to lock their doors and hide their valuables.
