Byron Museum Presents Historic Lecture

Byron (WIFR) -- Byron Museum of History and the Byron Bank invite the public to experience life in the Rock River Valley in the 1830’s in a presentation by Andrea Dubnick and Allen Reed. The Black Hawk War: Clash of Cultures lecture will take place October 13th at 11:00 a.m.

In April 1832 the venerable warrior Black Hawk led 1,000 men, women and children of the Sauk and Fox Indian Nations from Iowa to Illinois in a desperate attempt to retain their traditional lands and way of life. The Illinois militia and federal soldiers were sent in pursuit. Violence exploded between white settlers and Native Americans when militia troops fired on Black Hawk when he tried to surrender. Andrea Dubnick and Allen Reed are volunteers at Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, IL. At the fort they interpret the Black Hawk War of 1832 and the culture and history of north-western Illinois in the 1830's. Andrea and Allen are also beekeepers and run Gallowglass Academy in Leaf River, IL.

David Wise will give a talk and share historic documents, photographs and artifacts related to trains and how they were used in wartime.
