ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Empty and foreclosed homes have become a target for some other crimes in the Stateline. Rockford Police say burglaries are way up compared to this time last year.
Rockford Police say the burglars are targeting abandoned and for sale homes looking for scrap metals. They are also stealing a lot of televisions. Burglary to cars is also up--there were 76 cars broken into in January and cars are also being targeted in daycare parking lots in Rockford and Loves Park.

Maybe it is time to start leveling foreclosed homes, especially the ones that are on the west side and were built before the 1950’s. Is it cheaper to level them instead of updating them? I am sure that most of them have lead paint and asbestos and electrical wiring that isn’t up to code. An empty lot with grass looks better than an abandoned house that makes the rest of the neighborhood look run down. Is it worse for a home owner to live next to and empty lot or an abandoned home that attracts crime? Maybe this is part of the reason why Rockford made the top ten most miserable places to live.

I doubt anyone has ever heard a burglar say "Hey Im going to go break into that well lit home" Lights and timers folks. It can be as simple as that.
