Boone County Habitat Partner Families Receive Computers

BOONE COUNTY (WIFR) -- Habitat for Humanity International is partnering with Redemtech, a world leader in refurbishing large volumes of PCs from businesses, to provide Habitat partner families with computers.

Computers are refurbished and come with the following software installed: Windows 7 Operating System, Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malware bytes, Antimalware, and

Habitat affiliates were contacted by HFHI to determine their interest and need for computers for their partner families. To participate in the program, local affiliates must be willing to provide basic computer and internet safety training for each of their partner families that receive a computer.

Partner families must also be trained on the proper disposal of the computers. Asset recovery and recycling services are available from Redemtech free of charge for each family when the computers are replaced in the future.

Habitat for Humanity of Boone County has two partner families who indicated they needed a computer. The computers arrived on Thursday, September 27.

Ana Moreno and her three children are one of the two families who received a computer. They are very excited about getting the computer because all four of them have special reasons for needing a computer. Ana is currently taking college prep courses at Rock Valley College.
Her goal is to continue her studies to become a Medical Technologist. She will use the computer to complete some of her courses online.
Also, Ana’s three children, Yatzari, Lizette, and Aleksis, need a computer to complete their elementary school homework. They attend Washington Academy in Belvidere, IL.

Megan Johnson, Principal of Washington Academy, stated, “Yes, those students attend Washington Academy. We are a STEM school (science, technology, engineering, and math). Computers at home would be very helpful for these students since much of their school day involves working with technology. Having a computer at home will help reinforce their reading and math skills as well.”

Maria Gomez indicated that her family also needs a computer so that her children can complete their homework. However, Maria has other reasons for using a computer, including managing her bank account and doing research on health issues and local doctors. Maria is very concerned about fulfilling her responsibilities as a Habitat Partner Family, and managing her finances will be much easier with her new computer.

The two computers received from the Habitat/Redemtech Partnership program will definitely be put to good use by the Boone County Habitat partner families.
