OREGON (WIFR) – Chief Blackhawk has towered over Oregon for more than a century, standing up to heavy rain, snow and wind. The elements are now taking a toll, so the Department of Natural Resources is trying to figure out how to fix him.
The DNR hired an architectural firm to determine the extent of damage. They’ll submit their findings this fall and hopefully begin repairs next spring. Previous estimates have rung up at $625 thousand dollars. The DNR says that is already in the bank. More than half came from a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce.
