ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The longest serving leader of the Rockford Diocese is being remembered today.
The funeral Mass of Bishop O'Neill is being held today at 11a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter with Most Reverend David J. Malloy, Bishop of Rockford as the main celebrant and homilist.
Bishop O’Neill was 95 years of age. He was appointed Bishop of the Rockford Diocese on Aug. 19, 1968 and served until he retired on April 19, 1994 and was the Rockford Diocese’s longest serving bishop. Bishop O'Neill recently celebrated his 70th anniversary as a priest and was the first native of the Rockford Diocese to serve as its bishop.
Internment will be at St. Mary/St. James Cemetery, Rockford. Arrangements are being completed by Fitzgerald Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, at the request of the family, memorials can be made to the Diocesan Stewardship Appeal founded by Bishop O’Neill in 1975.
