ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- This election could be a game-changer for the Rockford School District.
A referendum on the ballot could dramatically impact the future of local schools. Today at the Lombardi club, the "Better Schools, Brighter Future" committee is tried to gain support for this bond referendum.
Rockford voters are being asked to approve the largest bond referendum in history. It would allow the school district to sell $139 million in bonds, to help fund some of its ten-year facilities plan. We wouldn't be paying higher taxes, since the district is simply swapping old debt for new. The district projects it will cost them more than $300 million to make all preferred improvements.
If the referendum passes, that money is expected to be used within the first five years.
