Belvidere Juvenile Charged as an Adult for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm

BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- Boone County State’s Attorney Michelle J. Courier announced that juvenile Pedro L. Sanchez, 16, of Belvidere, has been charged as an adult with one count of armed violence, one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm for the shooting that occurred on June 26, 2011, in the 500 block of Starr Street in Belvidere.

It is alleged that Sanchez discharged a firearm and caused injury to the victim in that he shot the victim in the stomach.

The armed violence charge, aggravated battery with a firearm, and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm are Class X felonies. Class X felonies are non-probationable and carry a sentencing range of 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, if convicted.

Sanchez’s next court date is August 5, 2011. His bond currently is set at $500,000 (10%).

Members of the public are reminded that these are only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the State’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
