BELVIDERE (WIFR) – 62 Illinois high school students will be honored for their 75 winning entries in the 2013 IWPA High School Communications Contest at its May 18, 2013, Awards Luncheon at the Union League Club of Chicago by the Illinois Woman’s Press Association, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women. The high school contest recognizes excellence among students in 20 categories.
Belvidere North High School, with faculty advisor Michael Doyle, earned the second highest number of points among student contest entrants. Prospect High School in Mt. Prospect, whose faculty advisor is Jason Block, won the Silver Pen Award and $100 for achieving the highest number of points, and Huntley High School, with faculty advisor Dennis Brown, achieved third place.

The judges for the 2013 contest included journalists from Crain’s Chicago, Chicago Tribune, Streetwise, and The Daily Herald, as well as instructors from Columbia College Chicago, Northwestern University, and Western Illinois University.
Nineteen 1st Place entries from Illinois have gone on to NFPW for national judging. Results will be honored August 22-24, 2013, at the national conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
