UPDATE: BELVIDERE (WIFR) – The K-Mart store in Belvidere will be staying open after all. Sears Holding Company, which owns the chain, says it’s not closing.
The company tells us the man who originally decided to close the location has stepped down. The new person in charge has decided to keep the store open for now. That means the pharmacy and restaurant will also stay in business. Meanwhile, the K-Mart in Sterling is still slated to close.
BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- Shoppers in Belvidere will have to drive a little further to shop at K-Mart. The business will close at the end of the year, taking nearly one hundred jobs with it.
The business' parent company Sears Holdings say the store will close its doors in January 2014. Long time shoppers aren't sure where they'll go to fill their prescriptions or pick up weekly supplies.
"I hate to see a store closing, it’s a sign of the times I guess," says shopper Dale Mathison.
“They’ve been here many years, the store is wonderful. It's very close. It’s too bad I don't want it,” says Coco Bernier.
91 people work at the store, most of them are part timers and will have a chance to apply for jobs at other K-Mart and Sears stores in the area. Belvidere's mayor says the company told him Friday they’d be leaving the area.
“K-Mart has been here a long time, I shop there I love their garden store. We don’t have a plan in place its premature. We need to sit down and see what potentials are,” says Belvidere Mayor Mike Chamberlain. "We are working on a number of initiatives to spur economic development, manufacturing, commercial, and retail. This presents another challenge."
The Belvidere K-Mart will close in the middle of January. The two Rockford stores will remain open.
