BELOIT (WIFR) – Another person is shot and killed in Beloit.
Beloit Police say 20-year-old Hykyme Hayes died around 9:30 Thursday morning, nine hours after being shot in the 500 block of 8th Street, on the city’s west side. Officers found Hayes lying on the sidewalk. Police have not made any arrests.
Officers are working around the clock to solve this case and more open murder investigations. City leaders say it’s not just up to the police department to stop the shootings.
Hykyme Hayes, yet another young man from Beloit, whose life was cut short by gunfire. It’s the city’s seventh murder this year, and the second in less than a week.
“Don’t have any kind of good explanation for it. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern here, there’s no gang war. It’s an incredibly horrible string of separate crimes.”
City manager Larry Arft says he’s just as worried about the string of violence as the people he represents and is looking for ways to help.
“We need ore mentoring to some of the people in the community. Hopefully parents will see this and will be sitting down with their children, having a talk with them.”
Rallies hosted by Beloit churches and other community leaders are trying to teach kids the importance of conflict resolution and not turning to guns to solve their problems.
City councilman David Luebke says all this community action is encouraging, but says the “snitches get stitches” mentality needs to change.
“It’s far better to act on it and notify somebody, an authority, and have nothing happen than not notify them and have a disaster or something very tragic happen.”
Although that change won’t happen overnight, city leaders believe it’s time for that change to start now.
“Hopefully that will bring this sad chapter in the city’s history to a close.”
There will be another community event on Wednesday afternoon at Summit Park. It’s been the scene of two shootings, including a murder over the weekend.
