With a brilliant offering of music, Season 2012-2013 is entitled New Directions!
Music Director Robert Tomaro consistently brings diverse repertoire with masterful interpretations to the podium and at the cusp of next year’s Sixtieth Anniversary, Maestro Tomaro is leading the orchestra into a new direction that offers a taste of what the Beloit Janesville Symphony is exploring musically to delight its audiences.
The opening 4:00 PM concert performance on October 28, 2012 at Beloit’s Eclipse Center is entitled Festivale Latino! Under the direction of Robert Tomaro, this concert highlights music honoring our Hispanic communities and offers the audience a wonderful combination of music and dance, celebrating the indigenous people of Mexico, Cuba and South America. Featured will be the music of composer in residence Victor Gerardo Pichardo, Music Director of Sones de Mexico and the exquisite dance ensemble Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl, under the direction of Julien and Cynthia Hernandez. Not to be missed is the gorgeous violin solo of the Tango “Por una cabeza”, in the talented hands of guest concertmaster Joseph Ketchum. Gershwin’s Cuban Overture and Suite One of the Three Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla, combined with the effervescent Sinfonia india by Carlos Chavez, will bring the evening to a rousing climax.
November 3, 2012 at 7:30PM, moves the BJS audience to Beloit College’s Wilson Theater to present JOE 2.0 to begin the Allegro Series. JOE 2.0 led by Joe Ketchum on electric violin and lead singer Xeno, former vocalist with Cheap Trick, will perform various rock, jazz, pop/contemporary and original selections accompanied by Ken Kosemeder, drums/vocals; Tatiana Miglianccio, violin; Olga Miliaeva Tuzhilkov, viola; and cellist Scott Cook. Come listen to this amazing evening of “Better living through strings”!
Home for the Holidays on December 2, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Eclipse Center will showcase musical favorites from the Christmas season and welcome the return of dynamic violinist Susan Aquila as guest concertmaster and the Beloit Memorial High School Choir directed by Jacob Truby. Last season, the BMHS Choir gave a stunning performance with the Symphony and brought rave reviews from audience members. And, who can forget last season’s double presentation of two concertos in one concert by violinist Susan Aquila? Please join us in welcoming her again to the stage.
With the new year, 2013 begins with the second Allegro Series performance at the Janesville Woman’s Club, January 19, 2013 at 7:30 PM. The Beloit Janesville Symphony Woodwind Quintet will present music of various composers that will lend towards a relaxing atmosphere in the Club’s intimate setting. The artistry of the principal wind players ensures an exceptional listening experience. The Quintet consists of: Mary Wilkosz, flute; Andy Olson, oboe; Marianna Werner, clarinet; Carol Rosing, bassoon; and Katie Johnson, French horn.
Get ready for the incredible talents of the Beloit Janesville Symphony Chamber Orchestra on March 9, 2013 at 7:30 PM at the Janesville Armory. Led once again by the dynamic guest concertmaster Susan Aquila, the powerhouse strings section of the BJS will perform works for “A Little Night Music”: Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings; Mendelssohn Sinfonia No. 8 and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nacht Musik. Mick Gilbertson’s Janesville Armory will provide an optional pre-concert dinner at an additional charge. Indulge in a four star gourmet feast with other Symphony patrons and enjoy music of the salons of old.
April 20, 2013 at 7:30PM at the Janesville Performing Arts Center stage, the BJS will perform the beautiful Beethoven Symphony No. 7 and a special arrangement of the Mozart Requiem. To provide another captivating vocal performance, the BJS will be assisted by the Beloit Janesville Symphony Masterworks Chorus, directed by Ellen Knutson and Janesville’s Parker High School Chorus, directed by Jan Knutson.
The third Allegro Series presentation will be on May 18, 2013 at 7:30 PM at one of Beloit’s favorite nightspots, Peter Gabriel’s La Casa Grande. On tap is Beloit Memorial High School’s award winning Jazz Band. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear these young jazz musicians and to dance the night away to music of the big band era.
