BREAKING: Standoff Underway in Loves Park

LOVES PARK (WIFR) -- A man is dead after keeping police in a stand off for more than four hours. Loves Park Police say the man likely died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It all started after 9:30pm Friday night when police say they were called out to meet a possible victim of domestic violence. Loves Park's Police Chief Jim Puckett says two officers then approached a man at his home in the 2300 block of Devon Avenue. That's when police say the man turned around and headed back into the home but a firearm could be clearly seen on his waistband. Police say the man then turned around and pointed the gun at the two officers who then drew their weapons and opened fire. Police say the man didn't fire upon the officers.

It's not clear if officers hit the man.

Police say shortly after the initial incident, they heard a single gunshot from inside the home.

Police evacuated the immediate area before a nearly four hour stand off ensued that ultimately ended when police discovered the man was dead in his home.

Investigators are still on the scene piecing together exactly what happened tonight.
