FREEPORT (WIFR) -- More than 3,000 names are on the Stephenson County Civil War Memorial in downtown Freeport and you can adopt one to help restore the monument.
The memorial is missing large chunks of stone and a 12 foot statue that used to stand at the top needs to be replaced. The work is estimated to cost around $80,000, so one Freeport man is giving out certificates to residents who adopt a soldier. They’re just 10 bucks and 100% of the money will pay for repairs.
“They gave their lives and this is our heritage. It’s a piece of history, it’s one of the most important events in our history almost 150 years ago and its crumbling and we have to fix it,” said Ron Werntz. "We owe it to these brave soldiers."
A Lena-Winslow student has already raised $13,000 to fix up the monument. If you want to get involved with this effort, you can visit the Restore the Soldiers Facebook page or email
