ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- It's hard to imagine a cake with 104 candles, but today Hilma Bennett celebrated a milestone birthday, reaching 104 years old.
Born in 1910, Bennett says she couldn't imagine what life would be like 104 years later. She says let alone still being alive to see it. Family members say Bennett is very self sufficient, and spends most of the day on her own. Bennett bought her Rockford home back in the 1950's. Senator Steve Stadelman came to congratulate her milestone achievement. Bennett says she credits her long life to her loved ones.
"You feel encouraged by them. They had confidence in you, and you met wonderful people accidentally along the way, and I think that's a lot to do with ones living," says Hilma Bennett.
Bennett says she hasn't seen this bad of a winter since 1936.
