STATELINE - (WIFR) A national program aimed at breaking down social barriers between high school students is set to come to three Stateline schools. It's called ‘Challenge Day.’ Stillman Valley, Byron, and Beloit are scheduled to take part and now some Rockford students are hoping to get the chance too.

A clip from the new MTV show called, 'If you really knew me,' goes behind the walls of high schools around the country. It's based on the program called ‘Challenge Day.’ The goal is to break down social barriers between students. In other words, dissolve cliques, which some Rockford students said are definitely noticeable.

"If you're not that cool you're not gonna be that cool. And if you like to wear a lot of black then you're gonna be with the people that wear a lot of black," East High School Sophomore, Amber Tillman said.

Tillman and Mariah Harris are both students at East High School. They've seen the popular MTV show and want the ‘Challenge Day’ program to come to Rockford. So they, and another student, started a facebook page to get support from the community called, 'Challenge Day Should Come to Rockford Public Schools.'

"Now we're up to about 430 I believe and it's only been about a day and a half," Senior, Mariah Harris said.

‘Challenge Day’ gives students the opportunity to get to know classmates outside of their clique.

These teens hope a ‘Challenge Day’ can reduce the number of fights, which is a big issue in District 205.

"We can always try it and see if it will cut down on all the fights," Tillman said.

"If it's not everyone, it will change somebody or the way they act or how they treat others," Harris said.

They plan to talk to District 205 leaders Monday to get support. District 205 leaders have no comment at this point.

According to the ‘Challenge Day’ Web site, between September 13th though the 16th, they will be at Stillman Valley, Byron, and Beloit high schools.

However, Beloit High School organizers said having a challenge day at your school does not mean MTV will film it. They said what's on MTV is coordinated through the challenge day program and is something they produce together. MTV reps did not return our calls for details about how this works.

It's not just for high school students, it says on the Challenge Day website that it's for studentts grades 7-12. But I think it would be great for Challenge Day to come to Rockford Public Schools!

I think this is a FANTASTIC idea! And for the students to want it is even better! I think through the internet we've lost a tremendous amount of socializing, and have distanced ourselves into seeing others as just a picture on a screen. We really do need to know others to understand them, and in order to do that we need to see their faces, their expressions, and get back to the healing power of touch. It's so much better to feel a person's inner self by being with them, rather than just reading something they may have typed on a monitor. Great idea!
