Boone County Latino Group Worried About Immigration Program
A program implemented in Boone county earlier this year is not as severe, but it is causing some controversy amongst the county's Hispanic community.

ALERTA invited Belvidere mayor Fred Brereton, county board chairman Bob Walberg and Boone county jail supervisor lieutenant John Hare to answer their questions. Hoping to clear up a lot of rumors surrounding the county's criminal alien program. So far about 50 people have been deported because of it.
"There was the concern about people were being held in the jail for more than 48 hours," said Ana Recendiz, ALERTA president.
First, Boone county's program is not the same thing as the Secure Communities program causing controversy in Winnebago county; Boone county has not yet signed on to that voluntary program. Second, it applies to everyone who is arrested in Boone county on a jailable offense. The goal is to keep dangerous criminals off the street.
"It's not random people," said Boone county jail supervisor, Lt. John Hare.
One of the biggest concerns folks at the meeting had was, if you are caught driving without a license and can not prove you are a citizen you can go to jail. That is not true. In Boone county driving without a license is not a jailable offense, so ICE will not be notified. You can be held up to 48 hours if you are flagged by the immigration and customs enforcement agency if you are arrested and sent to jail.
Community members felt that while a lot of their questions are still unanswered there at least is a dialog between the county leaders and the community.
The officials did say they would take a closer look at the secure communities program before deciding whether or not to take part in it. The Department of Homeland Security hopes to take secure communities nationwide by 2013.
Belvidere Latinos tell us they're also concerned about the few number of Latinos working in Belvidere government. Or on its police force. Belvedere's mayor encouraged more participation, but added there are currently no open positions as the city is facing a 1.6 million dollar deficit.

WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY LEAVE YOUR HOMELAND AND COME HERE FOR A BETTER LIFE? WHY NOT TRY TO FIX YOUR PROBLEMS THERE INSTEAD?WE DID WHEN ENGLAND TRYED TO TREAT US UNFAIRLY.ILLEGAL IMMIGRATES COME HERE TAKE JOBS AND THEN SEND THEIR MONEY BACK TO THEIR HOMELANDS.MOST DONT PAY TAXES AND USE YOUR SERVICES,THEN SAY WE ARE RACIST IF WE ASK THEM TO SHOW I.D. I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER BY POLICE AND ASKED FOR I.D. AND I GLADLY GIVE IT.I DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO HIDE.WE HAVE LAWS HERE AND WITHOUT THEM WE ARE NO BETTER THAN ANIMALS.IF YOU CANT GO BY THE LAWS WE HAVE HERE THEN FIND SOME PLACE THAT HAS DIFFERENT LAWS.
This is NOT a racial issue here at hand. It is a LEGAL issue and if you are not legal, then you might as well go back to where you are legal and welcomed, because you certainly ARE NOT WELCOME HERE. I'm so tired of this topic being brought up, find a way to get the low-lifes out of here. For those families that have been here for 20 years, that has been PLENTY of time to become legal. I hope law enforcement cracks down on these illegals.
@Matilda...what makes you think you are so much better than the rest of us? I have lived in "stuck in the middle of a cornfield town" my entire life. This is home to me. What I don't appreciate is....illegal immigrants living 5 families to 1 house, recieving food stamps and medical care, not paying taxes, etc...the "Latino" have given themselves a bad name. Not us "white" folk. We ARE the MINORITY around here. I have no problem with anybody as long as they do things legally. The rest of us do so why shouldn't they? If you are illegal and don't want to take the steps to become citizens then get the HELL OUT OF HERE!
