Rockford Police Top List for DUI Arrests
Drive drunk in Rockford and chances are good you'll get caught. Because besides Chicago more people get arrested for DUI here than anywhere else in the state.

ROCKFORD - (WIFR) "As traffic investigators we are DUI investigators for the most part. We investigate other traffic accidents, traffic violations. But with DUIs we work that particular time of the night where you're going to have perhaps the majority of intoxicated or impaired drivers on the street," said Investigator Vernon Sims.
In a recent study from the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, Rockford is ranked number one in Illinois, outside of Chicago, for DUI arrests in 2009. Four Rockford officers are in the top 20 for arrests. Investigator Vernon Sims caught 113 drunk drivers last year.
"The main thing we are looking for, we're looking for impaired driving. People that are crossing the center line, people that are driving too close to the curb. People that are driving recklessly in some manner. Perhaps someone who's driving excessively fast or perhaps someone who's driving exceptionally slow," Sims said.
Sims says he usually catches drunk drivers between 11 p.m. and three in the morning, especially on the weekends. Sunday night between nine and two is a prime time as well.
"When I'm on patrol I usually go with the main arterial streets, focus one who's where there's high traffic from bars. Restaurants that serve alcohol. Driving in those areas looking for cars that are driving in the manner I described earlier," Sims said.
When he pulls someone over it's his goal to find out why someone is driving erratically. Sometimes it's just because the person is texting or drowsy, but most of the time the offender is given away by the tell tale smell of alcohol.
"Some folks are just like any other folks we come in contact with, some are very remorseful, very sorry the did it. Some of the people we are arresting for being impaired are not necessarily violent, but they just tend to be very belligerent be very talkative and they tend to blame everyone except for themselves," Sims said.
A disturbing trend was found in the study; 83 percent of all drivers arrested for DUI are first time offenders. These drivers could potentially be more dangerous, as investigator Sims says he does notice first timers drive more erratically than a someone with a history of driving drunk.
The study also paints a picture of who the average drunk driver in Illinois is. They are a male, under the age of 35, with a blood alchoal content of .16 , that's twice the legal limit.

There seems to be some animosity towards my comments on here so let me clear a few things up. I don't drink and drive or go to the bars here because I see the obvious entrapment techniques that they use. I have never been arrested or gotten a DUI, Ron, I simply call it as I see it and I see a lot of cops who are hypocrites who think the law does not apply to them but they certainly make sure they give their coffer-filling tickets to the rest of us. And, no, I don't despise all police. There are certainly good ones out there who deserve recognition and I apologize if I inadvertently lumped them all together with my comments, but I still think there are too many with nothing to do. Again, seems nobody cares, why does Belvidere need the Chargers? It is my understanding that they are not allowed to pursue people in a high-speed chase,... so WHY the expensive sports cars? Seems like waste of taxpayer dollars to me. And thank you, April, I totally agree with you.
As good as the police are at catching the bad guys, I think most of the DUI and drug busts as they relate traffic stops is serendipity. Sometimes it's better to be lucky! We still need relentless prosecution on these cases. Funny how much money is made on these. Think about this, Do you really need a lawyer on a DUI? If you blow .08 guilty, lawyer or not.
Let me guess Ryan you've been arrested before and you just dispise the police for your stupid actions. You have no idea what police put up with everyday or maybe it's people like you they have to deal with. The next time you are in dire straits and need the help of the police do them a favor and not call them because if you can't back your local law enforcement then maybe you shouldn't ever call them when you need them. Rockford police barely get the backing from the city officials (mayor) and the police chief and they are running a skeleton crew because the state can't seem to get their act together in Springfield and on top of that they have to put up with some ignorant citizens in the community, all I have to say is they have their backs up against the wall and deserve our support, keep up the good job RPD.
