MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- More unclaimed property in Wisconsin was returned to its rightful owners in August than any other time since the state began doing so 37 years ago.

State Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass says her office returned 2.7 million dollars in unclaimed funds last month. That beats the record from February when 2.6 million was returned.

So far this year more than 16 million dollars in property has been returned.

Unclaimed property includes uncashed payroll checks, utility refunds, stocks, dividends and safe deposit box contents.

Last year more than 20 million dollars was returned to people and businesses in the state.
