Jury Duty Scam

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) -- Residents in Kenosha County are the latest to report a potential jury-duty scam.

Callers claiming to be court officials apparently call people and accuse them of missing jury duty. Then they ask for personal information, such as a Social Security number.

Glen Loyd is a consumer advocate for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. He says the scam sometimes work because people think they're in legal trouble.

Jury clerk Connie Massie says the first warning sign is receiving a phone call. She says her office never calls -- it puts everything in writing.

She also notes that some fake calls come after 5 p.m., but the courts aren't even open then.

Similar scam attempts have been reported in Green, La Crosse and St. Croix (CROY') counties.
