Low Carbs Help Cause 300 Jobs to Be Lost

The North Lake facility is one of more than a dozen Entenmann's plants in the United States. It's been making bagels, some Danish pastries and other sweet goods.

Toronto-based George Weston blames a decline in the North American sweet tooth for its decision to close the plant. About 333 employees will be put out of work.

The company announced its decision today as it reported earnings that fell by nearly a third in the second quarter.

The poor results were blamed on higher costs and the popular dieting trend away from carbohydrates, particularly white bread and cakes.
