OREGON, Ill. (AP) -- A Chicago teen who was fishing in the Rock River has gone missing, and officials fear the worst.
Officials say 15-year-old Damiam Folwarkow was fishing with his family near the Oregon Dam when he was pulled underwater. Witnesses say the boy called for help but was overpowered by the current.
Oregon police Chief Darin DeHaan says the river's current mixed with water coming over the dam creates a whirlpool effect. He says the boy's family didn't know about the river's current and undertow.
Signs near the dam warn people to stay out of the water, but police say the boy's family is from Poland and doesn't speak much English.
DeHaan says officials are considering erecting signs in multiple languages.
The search for the teen's body will resume this morning.
