State Budget

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The clock is ticking for state lawmakers, who have until tomorrow to come up with a new budget solution.

Lawmakers can either pass another temporary budget or craft a year-long plan. The temporary budget currently in place expires tomorrow.

Governor Rod Blagojevich (bluh-GOY'-uh-vitch) called a special session this weekend to discuss the budget, but about two-thirds of legislators skipped it.

So the governor called another special session for today -- when lawmakers were already scheduled to meet.

The Democratic governor is locked in an impasse with lawmakers over a new budget.

State government is now operating only because officials passed a one-month budget when the new fiscal year began July First.
