About 80 students were planning an all day sit-in at Oregon High School, but when administrators gave them a choice to either get back to class or leave, that's when they began their march.
Students say they are upset that two of their high school teachers, Samantha Wright and Candace Humphrey, are being laid off.
Superintendent Dr. Bill Mattingly says it's part of ten total teacher lay offs in the district. He says the state budget mess is partially to blame but also a decrease in enrollment. Over the past five years school enrollment has dropped by about 14%.
Dr. Mattingly says no school wants to lay off teachers but it has to be done to keep the budget in check.
But one teacher who was let go says she feels it was not a budget issue, that she was targeted.
Candace Humphrey, a Business teacher with Dist. 220 for the last three years says,"The principal started giving out evaluations and one of them, in writing, he wrote that I was a detriment to these students and the school; I would never cause harm to these students."
Superintendent Mattingly says, "It's heart-wrenching, people invest a major portion of their life preparing to come in to what we would like to think is one the noblest professions there is, and then because of economic ramifications, their life is affected."
Because of the layoffs, the number of kids in each classroom is expected to increase from about 18-22 students to about 25 students a class.
Superintendent Mattingly says if the financial situation does not improve next year, more layoffs may be necessary. They would also consider cutting some programs.
Students say they may plan another walk-out tomorrow.

It is rumored that the administration is funding a bus to be taken to Springfield with Belvidere and other school districts. My advice to my classmates, based on the comments displayed, is to allow the well-informed students of Belvidere to do the talking. By ranting on these blogs, students of OHS are doing nothing but proving their own incompetence at social activism. Not only are you protesting against the wrong people, half of the time there is no logical backing for your arguement. I understand that Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Humphrey are popular teaches, and I am just as sad to see them go as the rest of the student body. However, try protesting on the platform that the state should pay the money it owes, or that the RIF was handled poorly. Stating that "The school board should take a pay cut" does nothing but promote the image that you are all a bunch of angry, misinformed kids that are just yelling to yell.
If Mrs. Humphrey and Mrs. Wright are so harmful to all the students then why are they protesting? If they were to fire a teacher why not fire the teachers we dont like? Iv heard that Mrs. Humphrey and Mrs. Wright were the best teachers and I was looking forward to being in their classes next year. Way to ruin my future.
as an OHS student i know first hand just how great of teachers that Mrs.Humphrey and Mrs.Wright really are. Oregon high school is lucky to have them! They should not be getting rid of them. Why not get rid of two teachers who deserve to be fired instead of two extremely great teachers. The student body loves Mrs.Humphrey and Mrs.Wright they are both a big part of oregon high school! The administration is attempting to take our rights away, if we walk out SUSPENSION if we talk about it IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION which they should not be able to do. Its called the freedom of speech for a reason. We have the freedom to speak about whatever we want to speak about we also have the freedom to assemble but they obviosuly dont care! The student body wants their voices to be heard and they arent going to just let it go "WE WILL BE HEARD"
