Officer Shooting in Freeport

It all played out after officers were called to an apartment building along the 15-hundred block of South Chicago Avenue about 1:45 a-m. Police say the victim, Dwayne Howard of Freeport, agressively threatened officers with a knife and refused to stop. That's when one of the officers, whose name is not being released, shot Howard. He was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. "At this point it's very early in the investigation, but there's nothing to indicate the officers actions were anything other than appropriate given the circumstances surrounding the situation," said Freeport Police Chief Jerry Whitmore. Whitmore says the officer is on paid leave. There is both an internal and external investigation taking place on the shooting.

I LOVE HOW ALL THESE PEOPLE WANT TO CALL THIS GUY A GREAT PERSON..GREAT PEOPLE DONT COME AFTER THE POLICE WITH A KNIFE. EVERYONE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT HOW ALL COPS WANT TO DO IS BEAT PEOPLE DOWN. WHEN IT IS ALL SAID AND DONE ALL THAT COP WANTS TO DO IS GO HOME TO HIS FAMILY AFTER EVERY SHIFT HE WORKS AND MAKE SURE THAT THE COMMUNITY IS KEPT AS SAFE AS HE CAN MAKE IT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THINK ABOUT IF SOMEONE CAME INTO YOUR HOUSE WITH A KNIFE..WOULD YOU TRY TO SHOOT HIM IN THE LEG OR STOP HIM FROM HURTING YOU. AND NO COPS ARE NOT TRAINED TO SHOOT SOMEONE IN THE LEG. JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE CALLS 911 DOES NOT MEAN HE NEEDS HELP. EVER HEARD OF AN AMBUSH..HAPPENS QUITE MORE THAN YOU THINK. ITS AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED AND I MEAN EVERYONE. ILL BE PRAYING FOR EVERYONE THAT WAS INVOLVED.

First--If you want people to take your opinions seriously, you need to be able to spell correctly(or at least better than a second grader) and create an articulate and coherent sentence--most of these posters fail to do either. Second,I wonder how the supporters of the victim would feel if one of those police officers had been their husband, father, or boyfriend; a knife can also kill a person, and body armor does NOT protect against knife attacks. Last, I would never define a "good man" as someone who threatens ANYONE with a knife, drunk or not. However, that said, what happened IS unfortunate, and I do feel badly for the victim's family.

I read all these comments about tazers and mase and wonder why no is asking why this person didn't put the knife down. If there are 4 police officers asking you to disarm, that is what you do. It is not a debate on what type of "immobilizing option" the police use. It should be a debate on why so many people don't just comply with the police officers in the first place.

if he refused to drop the weapon why wasn't he tazed instead of shot? as for kevin of freeport, how could you praise someone that didn't use common sense, four cops to one person be for real.if he called 911 then obviously there was something wrong with him in the first place. think before you re-act. my sympathy goes to the family & his children.

Officers have been killing and shooting alot lately. They also have the ability to shoot someone without killing them, this makes me afraid because they are shooting to kill. Where are all those handy new cadets they should carry that we see on cops?

I guess the Freeport police don't have access to billy clubs, or mase, or Tazers, considering the fact the victim ONLY had a knife, a knife, not a pistol, or anything 4 officers couldn't have gotten from the victim, the cops here in freeport are realyy good at splitting heads, and beating up guys, I don't understand why they didn't o what they are so good at doing around here, 3 or 4 of them usually idve on one person, why wasn't that an option? A tazer would of immobilized him, mase, would have immobilized him, shooting him twice? was definately, way, way over the top. Rest in Peace "Bosco". He was a good man. He really was.

I think there should be other alternative action when dealing with an armed person with a knife, since there was more than one officer at the scene. Maybe shooting him in the leg or some place less fatal
