Freeport city council voted 6 to 2 to raise monthly water fees by two dollars and then an additional two dollars in 2011 and 2012.

This will fund a $10 million water and sewage project to revamp city sewer lines, increase water meter accuracy and upgrade outdated electronic tracking systems. The new charge kicks in in May.

A groundbreaking is scheduled for May 2011.
