Madigan Convenes Special Session, Then Sends House Home

Governor Rod Blagojevich ordered the special session hoping it would break a deadlock over the state budget, but House Speaker Michael Madigan opposes the idea. He says there is no reason to pay lawmakers to show up in Springfield if there is not a budget agreement for them to consider.

He sent House members home and told them to come back Monday for a previously scheduled session day. The House will vote Monday on a temporary budget.

That would let government keep operating even if there is no permanent budget when the new fiscal year starts July 1.

Senate President Emil Jones says a temporary budget is not needed. He is keeping senators in Springfield for the special session.
