Massive long-term debt and a loss of revenue is forcing the Poplar Grove village board to make some tough calls, including a decision that could mean two less sheriff's deputies in Boone County.
A special meeting devoted to the village budget was held tonight. Board members and concerned citizens discussed a utilities and telecommunications tax, renting out the top of the village's water towers to cell phone companies and the possibility of vehicle stickers.
Village estimates show these ideas could bring in nearly $300,000. Some ideas such as the utilities tax are not out of the ordinary and many similar villages have had them for years.
Despite the possible fee increases and cuts, local residents believe the village leadership is doing what's right.
"I think they're doing a great job. Brad's taken a lot on his hands now in the short time that's he's been here with us, he's done a great job. He's got his plate full and I know with the committee here they're really working hard to try and bring things together and try to pull us out of here," says Steven Westlund.
One idea that was brought up by a local citizen in attendance was to enforce truck weight limits along their stretch of route 173. This would result in additional revenue from fines and reduce the wear and tear on the road.
It's not currently enforced due to a lack of equipment.
