Christmas In July - Web Only Story

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Christmas has come to Dane County -- sort of.

The Salvation Army is bringing out the red kettles and bell ringers that most people associate with winter months.

It's part of the group's Christmas in July campaign. Organizers hope to raise 30-thousand dollars.

So far that campaign has raised nearly ten-thousand dollars, thanks to about 250 volunteers at 25 locations across the county.

The group says the donations help stock food pantries for families that have children home from school.

Salvation Army spokeswoman Margery Dittmer says the winter months are more profitable, but the summer campaign raises enough money that organizers will bring it back next year for a fifth run.
