Wisconsin Retail Food Prices Up in 2nd Quarter

Food prices in Wisconsin have climbed five percent during the second quarter of the year.

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation attributes the increase to higher energy prices, primarily the cost of gas and transporting the products.

The group says other factors include stronger demand for dairy products and a persistent drought in the southeast.

Federation spokesman Tom Thieding says the increase is among the largest since the group began collecting data 15 years ago.

The federation surveys the price of 20 basic grocery items at stores in 26 Wisconsin communities. The average total bill is 50 dollars and 33 cents, or two dollars and 48 cents higher than for the first quarter of 2007.

Among the biggest increase is a gallon of whole milk, up 31 cents to three dollars and three cents.

The only two items that declined are eggs and red delicious apples.
