Cindy Dollarhide lives alone with her cat, but thanks to a group of local volunteers she's not lonely.
"She's my lifeline. I love her dearly and the organization is absolutely phenomenal." says Dollarhide.
The Legacy Corps specializes in socializing with seniors. Because of the program, volunteer coordinator Jaci Jelen has become good friends with Dollarhide.
"Sometimes I'll cook with her. She has taught me a lot about cooking. I'll prepare meals once in a while for her maybe to heat up later." says Jelen, Legacy Corps' Volunteer Coordinator.
After a quick brunch Monday morning the pair headed down to Sullivans for some groceries. Legacy Corps Supervisor Sarah Raymond would like to see this scene played out all over Freeport.
"The response has been great from seniors wanting services, unfortunately the need for volunteers is a bit more than what we can handle at this moment." says Raymond.
There are only 4 volunteers for 12 clients right now, plus 6 more on a waiting list. Jelen says if they don't get some more volunteers soon the program could crash and burn. Legacy Corps programs in Boone, Jo Daviess and Winnebago County are also looking for more help.
If you are interested in volunteering you can call Sarah Raymond or Jaci Jelen at 815-233-2190 for Stephenson and Jo Daviess Counties. Winnebago and Boone County residents should call Elaine Pflueger at 815-395-8716.
New applicants would spend 8 to 10 hours a week volunteering. In return they receive a small stipend of $2000 a year. In addition, they get about $1200 which can be used for college tuition or paying off a student loan.
