Harvard Milk Days Kicks Off With New Harmilda

This year Milk Days celebrants will be greeted by a new Harmilda. Since 1966 the fiberglass cow has been perched on a pedestal at a busy intersection in Harvard, but festival organizers say weather takes its toll on the mascot so three Harmildas have now been put out to pasture.

The latest statue is five-feet-tall, eight-feet-long and cost about $2,300. Harvard has long proclaimed itself "Milk Capital of the World" because of the numerous dairies in the area. The Milk Days festival starts Friday.

(Harvard is about 30 miles northeast of Rockford)
