Authorities say 27-year-old Christopher Speck had just returned to Rockford on May 22 after moving former Rockford Deputy Police Chief Jeff Morris' furniture to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where Morris is now police chief.
Police say a witness reported smoke coming from a duffel bag in the back of the parked truck. And officers called to investigate say they found a portable meth lab in the truck.
Speck is charged with manufacture with intent to deliver more than 400 grams of the drug.
The police chief says he "vaguely" remembers Speck as his mover, and he adds, "Now I guess we know why he stayed in the truck the whole time."
