Some District 205 parents are frustrated tonight with what they call a lack of notification about the incident.
Many say they were in the dark about the arrest and lockdown that happened today at Auburn High School’s main campus, including Mary Ortiz.
"I did not receive any notification until i came home from work".
She was one of many parents stuck at work when the main campus went into hard lockdown today. Text messages from her daughter were all the information she received until local media began to report on it.
"The system that was in place last year sent us text messages on our cell phones, and emails, and placed calls. We were all expecting those, none of those came."
Messages were sent out, but it seems only home answering machines received the warning.
"…No one is in harm's way, but the lockdown is remaining in place as a precaution -- friday 11:15 am," it said. Even then the information was not sent out until the incident had been resolved.
While how the parents were notified remains at the top of Ortiz's concerns, the safety of the school comes in a close second, and she believes more can be done in the to protect them.
"The metal detectors, I don't think that's a bad idea, I think that that's a good idea."
The Auburn High School Campus principals believe the problem is outside of their walls. In a letter sent home with students today, the principals of both campuses say, "What happened here today is not an indicator of school safety, but an unfortunate reflection of what is occurring in the streets of our community."
Metal detectors and school uniforms are some of the options that will be discussed to help prevent future incidents involving weapons being brought into school.
