As the winter storm sets in road conditions are getting steadily worse causing drivers to slide into ditches. The snow build up is most noticeable on the residential streets. Plows are just now starting to make their way through neighborhoods after the City of Rockford declared a snow emergency at 9pm.

Even though the snow may be piled highest just outside your home, being on nearly any road right now is dangerous. Reports of accidents due to the weather are coming in from all over the stateline area.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department has received more than 20 calls about cars skidding into ditches. When asked what other incidents they've had, they simply said that cars everywhere are "sliding all over".

To our north in Rock County, highway 26 is getting ready to open after being closed for about 3 hours. There have been 35 weather related accidents, but only one has resulted in someone getting hurt.

Stephenson County has not has not had any major accidents, but they have had more than ten cars in ditches, including two semis.

A similar situation in Ogle County where more than 30 cars have found there way into a ditch, but no major accidents.

Rockford's manager of street operations gave some sound advice in regards to driving in this storm, "If you don't have to travel, don't. If you have to be somewhere such as work, or dropping your kids off with school, please allow enough extra time to get there."

If you're taking his advice and staying home make sure if you've parked in the street that you are on the “even address” side until 8 in the morning. At that time you will need to move your car to the odd side so trucks can clear the streets -- and so you can avoid a ticket.

the roads are pretty much a full sheet of ice. If they open up the schools tomorrow they are crazy and putting all the children in risk. even with all the snow plows there still not getting any of the ice off. it will be reduiculous for the schools to open tomorrow morning.

I have plowed in Rockford for 12 years now. I have never figured out why they cant figure out the easiest way to plow the roads. They need to take lessons from the Winnebago County guys who plow Perryville. Instead of sending plows in all different directions they need to put three plows following each other and doing the entire road in one swipe. Because with the way that they do it, you have one plow making his pass down the road, and by the time he makes his loop and gets back to that same place people have ran over the snow that he has moved and thrown it back onto what he just plowed... Its common sense Rockford..The city needs to look at the people they have running these city trucks instead of complaining about their budget restraints. They need to hire experienced and smart people!I always chuckle when I see the Rockford plows making their first pass down an unplowed road throwing salt..then on the next pass they plow it right into the ditch. Talk about a waste of city's $$$

Its not even that bad out.. people are acting like there is three feet of snow on the ground. I would think the cold is what is dangerous more than anything, you just need to learn how to drive in the snow, or be patient and wait until the roads are cleared. In Minnesota they dont plow until there is 4" on the ground and they never close school... different strokes for different folks.
