A Winnebago County judge has upheld the firing of a Rockford police officer. Officer Steven Johnson had sued Rockford Police Chief Steven Pugh and others connected with his firing last year.
In his decision handed down Tuesday, Judge Ronald Pirrello ruled the actions of Officer Johnson constituted proper grounds for dismissal. Johnson was first suspended when it was discovered he called a friend who was wanted by police.
Johnson maintained he called to urge him to surrender. The department claimed Johnson's call facilitated in the friend's escape. Johnson is the son of Rockford city alderman and Winnebago County Clerk Dave Johnson.
