Fake Fire Alarms Disrupt East High School
District 205 leaders work to reassure parents, after a scary day at East High School, with fire alarm disruptions and rumors of major fights.

We're hearing conflicting stories about disruptions at East High School. The fire alarm has been pulled four times in two days and District 205 administrators say that's where the problems end. But several students and parents have far more serious safety concerns.
"Alright let me tell you what happened, there was not a riot," says Earl Hernandez. The District's new Executive Director of Schools spent his evening addressing concerns from East High School parents.
Hernandez spent most of his day at the school and says prank fire alarms did disrupt classes three times Thursday, once Wednesday. But he says the rumors circulating that there were riots and fights there all day are untrue.
"As far as text messages going out that there were five guns there and knives and a kid stabbed, I mean these things are just not true, not accurate," says Hernandez.
But some students aren't convinced.
"Every, probably I'd say, 15 minutes there's been a fight and that's been the whole day," says East High School Junior Brody Rose.
"It's really scary actually, like I didn't want to come to school for a couple of days."
East principal Mark Wallace says there were disruptions while bringing 1,500 students in and out of the building for the fire alarm evacuations, but he says it was nothing more than minor pushing and shoving.
"Administrators have been right there in the middle of it and have not seen anyone physically hitting anyone else or anything of that nature," says Wallace.
There were also food fights in the cafeteria. Three students were identified as instigators of the fights and will likely be suspended. One of the three was arrested.
"He got up on the table and grabbed one of the large trash containers in the cafeteria and threw it in the direction of the crowd," says Hernandez.
One student was also arrested for pulling a fire alarm. He faces criminal charges and possible expulsion.
As for the numerous calls 23 news has received from concerned parents saying there was more violence going on, Hernandez says he can only reassure them so much and in the end he says, "People are going to have to believe what they choose to believe."
There were extra Rockford police, private security and District administrators on hand Thursday and that will be the case Friday. Some students we spoke to wish there were more police in school every day. But administrators say they do provide an appropriate level of security.

I have heard numerous stories today as well with the same things happening....along with there is absolutely no power at East. And this is coming from a parent's mouth. My baby sitter went there to sign her daughter out for the day and there was absolutely no power!! How can students learn if there is not any power!? I think RPS is just covering thereselves. In my opinion, I think they should shut the school down until they figure out what's going on! WE DONT NEED ANOTHER COLUMBINE!!
Oh Lord... Cover Up = East High School
