Illinois students who want to become teachers now must pass a basic skills test before entering a college program.

Gov. Ryan signed a bill requiring students prove they have mastered rudimentary skills before they enter a teacher preparation program. The bill also requires teachers to pass a test in the specialty area they're entering before student teaching.
