President Obama and the First Lady will attend a memorial service for the victims Tuesday in Texas. CBS News Correspondent Manuel Gallegus reports from Fort Hood Army Post.
Witnesses say Major Nidal Hasan stood on a desk at Fort Hood's soldier processing center and started shooting, firing at least a hundred rounds from a semiautomatic handgun that did not belong to the military. In all 46 people were struck or grazed by bullets ricocheting off desks and the tile floor. For those who are still in the hospital, the recovery will not be easy.
"There is a possibility that they will be physically impaired the rest of their lives, and there's no doubt they will be psychologically impaired the rest of their lives," says Roy Smythe, Chief of Surgery at Smith White Hospital.
On the base the names of the dead were read out loud.
Among the 13 killed, Francesca Velez, a 21 year old pregnant soldier who just returned home from Iraq.
John Gaffaney, a 56 year old captain who had just arrived at Fort Hood and was about to be sent to Iraq.
And a 21 year old who quit his job at a furniture company for a future in the military.
There were two civilian police officers employed by the army who responded to the shooting, getting into a firefight with Hasan. Sgt. Kimberly Munley is credited with bringing him down.
The 34 year old mother of a little girl is in good condition after she was shot in the leg. Her former partner says she is recovering well.
"I've known Kim for years, and she is not only physically strong - I don't know if you know, but she's vertically challenged, but she packs a lot of might in that little frame," says Shaun Appler, Munley's former partner.
Hasan remains under guard at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He's still in intensive care but was taken off a ventilator.
Investigators say they have not established any kind of motive for the crime.
