Four people are dead after a series of explosions rock a plastics plant in central Illinois late Friday night.
The Formosa Plastic Plant is located in Illiopolis, about 25 miles east of Springfield. Two bodies were discovered early Saturday and another two were confirmed dead Saturday afternoon. Eight others were hurt.
Authorities say the dead and injured were among 18 workers who were on duty at the plant when the explosions occurred.
About 1,000 residents were evacuated from the area after the explosions. As firefighters continue to battle the blaze Saturday, all but about 60 who live within a mile of the plant were allowed to return home.
The explosion was felt as far as five miles away. The plant manufactures polyvinyl chloride used in PVC pipe and other materials for construction, medical supplies and automotive parts.
No word yet on what caused the blast.
