Being in the courtroom today really proved the damage drinking and driving can do. 45-year-old Wesley Hanson's victim, 17-year-old Amanda Kordich, had about three dozen friends and family members there to hear her killer's sentence. Judge John Truitt ruled Hanson will serve nine years in prison. A sentence some relatives believe isn't long enough.
Kordich's mother, Diane Kordich was one of three relatives to testify on how Amanda's death deeply effected her and the family's life. Amanda died in July 2008, when Hanson blew through a red light and crashed into her at Harlem and Forest Hills Roads. Hanson's blood alcohol content was about double the legal limit and had marijuana in his system at the time. Diane testified this incident led to serious marital problems for her. And a cousin admitted the situation sparked her to attempt suicide. The hardest part they say though is the terrible void now in their lives.
"I think the legal system and the legislation is terrible. It's there for the guilty, not the innocent. My baby lied there dead on the scene and none of her rights were given to her. They went out of their way and they over extended his rights so that he would be accommodated every way possible," Diane says.
Diane says she'll be actively working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. (M.A.D.D.) Today, Hanson also took the stand and apologized to the family. He says he suffers immense guilt for surviving the crash and will now make it his mission to educate others of the harm drinking and driving could do.
Amanda Kordich was about to enter her senior year at Harlem High School. She had her sights set on going to college and becoming a doctor.

I doubt that they do anything. People who do lesser crimes get more time than people who kill people. What' up with that. Sounds like to court needs a overhaul
It's time to bring responsibility back.
Whatever happened with Mark Bonne's DUI the second time he got arrested with a DUI last spring?? Did he get sentenced yet? Mark Bonne is Rockford School's Public Relations Director. Instead of getting canned, he got promoted. Maybe the next time Mark Bonne drives drunk and kills somebody, he will face some consequences.
