Preliminary results are in on the analysis of human remains found Thursday near the Belvidere Oasis off Interstate 90.
Boone County Sheriff's Police say the skeleton is that of a white, male, age 50 or older.
The cause of death is still unknown. The case is being treated as a death and missing person investigation, not a criminal one.
A Verizon utility worker made the gruesome discovery. The remains were found in a field, just north of I-90, right before the Belvidere Oasis.
Police also discovered a plaid shirt and pair of shorts nearby. They estimate the body had been there for one and a half to two years.
The remains have been sent to a forensic anthropologist for further analysis. Sheriff's police are not expecting conclusive results for another 60-90 days.
Meanwhile, they've entered the clothing description and time frame into a nationwide database of missing persons in hopes of finding a match.
Boone County Sheriff's Police say no one in our area, that would've been reported missing about two years ago, fits this description.
