Illinois State Fruit

WOODLAWN, Ill. (AP) -- A group of southern Illinois students thinks the state is all about apples.

A fourth-grade class in Woodlawn has proposed that Illinois adopt the apple as its state fruit.

Their teacher Mark Richardson contacted Senator John O-Jones from Mount Vernon and he sponsored the bill.

It passed the Illinois Senate last week and has been referred to the state House.

Ten-year-old Holly Caroll says the class read about a school in Massachusetts that got a state fruit passed. So they wanted to try the same thing.

The students picked the apple because of the state's history with the fruit. For instance, the GoldRush is a cross between a Golden Delicious and another unnamed apple that was developed in Illinois in 1972.
