The Bachman family of Winnebago has now settled its lawsuits against Winnebago County.
They centered around a crash with a sheriff deputy that killed two of the Bachman's sons and seriously injured their daughter.
The Bachman's family attorney Daniel McGrail says they reached a settlement Friday in the final civil case against Winnebago County. It involves the death of DJ Bachman. And wraps up years of fighting for accountability for this accident.
McGrail dedicated an entire room in his office to the Bachman case. A collage of family photos and accident scene drawings decorate the wall. McGrail says everything in here helped reach Friday's $1.5 million settlement for DJ.
He says the sheriff's office will also make a public statement, taking responsibility for Deputy Joseph Boomer. While he was acquitted, Boomer was still driving to a call with no lights and sirens when he hit the Bachman's car.
According to McGrail, the deal says the county will also recognize national experts, saying Kori Bachman, driving the family's car at the time, wasn't to blame for the collision.
"For her to be blamed for that is unjust. And it was either going to come out in trial or was going to be acknowledged by sheriff's office. It's going to be tough forever for them. But getting this phase of justice completed I think is going to help," McGrail said.
The family issued a written statement Friday, saying from the beginning this case wasn't about money. But rather seeking the truth on behalf of their three children. And helping other families avoid similar tragedies.
The county is withholding any comments until the settlement is finalized. They say that won't happen until the judge dismisses the case and that could take at least a month.
