SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says 186 communities across the state really know how to take care of their trees.
The communities have been designated part of the Tree City U-S-A program.
In order to participate, the city must promote tree planting and care in urban areas.
Some of the qualifications for the program are that the community must assign a city official or volunteer to manage tree care. The city must also spend at least two dollars per resident on urban forestry.
The communities will be presented with their awards today and Thursday.
It is the 31st year of the national program.
