A horse slaughterhouse in Dekalb gets the okay to rebuild after a fire, a measure that would have prevented that failed in the Illinois House Thursday. Last year horse lovers protested the construction.
Cavel International plans to build a 16,000-square-foot plant. They would slaughter as many as 100 horses a day for shipment to places like Japan and Europe. The plant will create 40 jobs and replace one that operated until a 2002 fire.
Critics argue since state law prohibits the sale of horse meat in Illinois, slaughtering the animals should be banned too.
